has to offer, it’s time to pull back the curtain a little further with another character reveal.

This time, it’s the turn of the blonde bombshell with the fiercest dragon punch in the street fighting business. His favourite colour is red, he’s the heir to a multi-million dollar company and he’s been in every main Street Fighter game since the beginning. We can only be talking about Ken Masters.

Unlike his more calm and collected friend, Ken has always been characterised by his burning fists and aggressive fighting style. In Street Fighter V, the Masters family has grown bigger, but this hasn’t dulled Ken’s martial artistry or his temperament for flashy combos. If anything, this is the most in-your-face Ken has ever been, and that’s largely down to his new V-Skill and V-Trigger.

The Quick Step is all about closing the distance. It’s a V-Skill that lets Ken run forwards. But far from being a simple pressure tool, it opens up new options. You can cancel the Quick Step at any time, as well as perform additional moves out of it. It’s a versatile technique that takes the iconic Shotokan fighting style and (super) turbo charges it with forward momentum. Do you remember Ken’s step kick from Street Fighter IV? This time, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

If the Quick Step is the driving force that lets Ken dictate the fight, then the Heat Rush is how he wins it. It’s a V-Trigger that does exactly what it says on the tin. You burn the whole V-Gauge, and in return, Ken’s body becomes engulfed in flames. It won’t last forever, but if you can break your opponent’s defence while it’s still active, the ensuing combo will incinerate a large chunk of their health. It’s also the perfect fuel for an epic comeback.

They may’ve been trained by the same master, but Ryu and Ken have always walked a very different path. The former hits hard with concreted blows while the latter strikes quick and often. This gap has gotten even wider in Street Fighter V, and with the Quick Step and Heat Rush backing him up, Ken is tailor made for rushing the opponent down. Consider that fair warning.
