Hi Street Fighter fans, Matt Edwards here, Fighting Games Community Manager from Capcom UK. As you’re probably aware, the first beta for Street Fighter V has just gone live. Successful candidates will have received their codes over the past 24 hours, with the beta getting underway from 2am BST this morning. It will then come to a close at around midnight on 29th July. As such, we’d like to give you a rundown of what to expect!

At the start of the beta, four characters are available. This includes the wandering warrior, Ryu, the Interpol agent, Chun-Li, the head of Shadaloo, M. Bison, and the shadow from the past, Nash. In order to test our content delivery system, Birdie and Cammy will not be available until Sunday, but we assure you that both these brawling Brits are well worth the wait.

Once you arrive at the select screen, you can pick a character and head straight for the grid. The grid is central to the beta experience. It’s here that you can practise your combos, configure your buttons and change your character. You also need to be mindful that once an opponent is found, you cannot change your character before the match starts.

For this beta, you cannot invite your friends into a match. All opponents are chosen at random while you wait in the grid, and you can be matched with an opponent from anywhere in the world. We’d like to stress that this is not how the final game will function. The purpose of the beta is to test our location tracking and match-making algorithm across a wide range of international connections. We’re committed to making Street Fighter V the definitive fighting game experience, and that’s both offline and online. The data we collect from the beta will help us achieve this goal.

To ensure that the online dragon punches and hurricane kicks remain steady throughout the beta, we’ve scheduled maintenance for a short period every day. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to play the beta during this time, but on the upside, this represents a perfect opportunity to submit your feedback on the official Street Fighter V

We’d also like to point out that the PlayStation Share functionality will not be available during the beta. You can still share your own Street Fighter V photos and videos, but you’ll have to use your own capture equipment. And for those wondering about the recently announced experience points and Fight Money, these are currently placeholder and do not affect the experience.

Right, that’s everything you need to know about the most anticipated beta in fighting game history. I look forward to meeting some of you in battle over the coming days, and on behalf of Capcom, I’d like to thank everyone who participates. You’re getting a sneak peek at a game that’s still deep within its development cycle, but with your help, Street Fighter V is shaping up to be the greatest fighting game ever made.

Welcome to the world of Street Fighter V, prepare for battle!
